Who's feeling the financial pinch
29% report financial discomfort

As the government contemplates tax relief and other measures to lower the cost of living, a Horizon Research survey details who are suffering most financial discomfort and can't meet basic needs.


The survey finds 29% of New Zealanders saying their financial situation is currently uncomfortable.


This equates to around 1,159,000 adults. Although not significant, this is a slight increase from 27% in November 2023.


  • 9% (349,000 adults) are most uncomfortable and are struggling financially to meet basic needs.

71% (2,890,000 adults) are comfortable with their financial situation. This is a slight decrease from November 2023.

  • 12% (474,000 adults) are very comfortable and have enough money to meet all their needs.




Since November 2023, there has been a significant increase in the number of 35-44 year olds who are struggling financially.

Who is feeling comfortable financially?


Older age groups more likely to feel comfortable financially.


 


34-45 year-olds' comfort declines 10%, discomfort up 13%


Among 35-44 year olds, there has been a decline in feeling comfortable and having enough money to meet most needs.

The online survey of up to 1,035 adults in New Zealand. The survey has a maximum margin of error of ±3% overall.


The survey was conducted as part of Horizon's public interest research programme.
